too much sound, too much fury

It’s disappointing how you claim to be so tolerant, and yet the only thing you can learn from an institution as fine as the Ateneo is how to be intolerant of people who choose to express themselves in ways which may be inconvenient to you.

Tolerance or acceptance isn’t just about not minding each other. It’s about trying to understand eachother, and for as long as you dismissively brand anyone who tries to argue as annoying, war-freaks, kill joys, or whatever else, you’re missing the entire point of tolerance. Sure, you may not agree with the manner of expression, but when the manner is all you can see, and is how you define the validity of what they have to say, then you’re no different from those who think anything not written in “highfalutin” english is not worth reading.

Talk is where action starts. Talk without action is often less harmful (and less stupid) than action without talk. As soon as we dismiss talk, we dismiss the kind of thought, discernment, deliberation, and criticism that would lead to fruitful action. Don’t undermine the what Socrates has to teach us (I’m currently in a school which thrives on the socratic method). He shows us that no argument must be left untouched and that questioning and discourse is where the best ideas of our time really come from. Don’t undermine the sound, it’s not all fury.

When getting “there” becomes the point, we’ll settle for any “there” we can get to.
